Homework club

Info from Guidance department:
Dear Parents & Guardians,
Once again, the MSPA has agreed to fund homework club at John Glenn Middle School! This year’s homework club will be held after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Tuesday, October 2nd. The location of
homework club will take place in the main library, with alternate rooms provided as back-up when the library is not available. Homework club is a resource available to any and all students. Our goal is to provide a fun and
flexible environment where students can learn and practice good study habits, build confidence in grade level concepts, while working with peers or 1:1 with a staff member. Some of you may be contacted by our guidance
department if it has been determined by your child’s teaching team that he or she would benefit from attending homework club, to receive help with work completion, time management, and modeling of content strategies and skills. These students are strongly encouraged to attend both sessions each week. Even if you have not been directly contacted, please know that this resource will be available to students through late spring, so encourage your child to access homework club when they are feeling that they need some extra guidance, perhaps before a test or during a project, or if they just want to get some work done before they go home. Individual teachers will continue to provide their own extra help sessions based on their own routine and will continue to communicate
these with their individual classes and students.

Homework club, offered two days per week-Tuesday and Thursday, begins at 2:30 and runs until 3:30. The 2:30 start allows students adequate time to organize themselves at their lockers before checking into the library.
School policy expects students remaining after school to be supervised at all times. As a result, students are expected to come to homework club with all the materials necessary to complete their assignments. They will not be allowed to leave to use vending machines, go to lockers, or wander the building without permission and a pass. Due to concerns for student safety and accountability, students are not permitted to leave homework club early unless they have a parent picking them up. Students can be picked up at the end homework club by a parent or they may choose to walk to the High School for the Late Bus. Use of cell phones for conversations or texting during homework club is not allowed. In conjunction with the new cell phone policy, student phones will
be taken away by staff members if they are used during homework club. Students will have time between the end of the school day and the start of homework club to contact home if needed.

Students attending homework club will follow the behavioral and work expectations that will be explained by the program teachers. There will be a three strikes rule in place for those who are disturbing other students or
interfering with the purpose of homework club. If students are misbehaving, disrespectful, or disruptive, they may be asked by the supervising staff member to leave, and their parents will be notified. A schedule is attached to the back of this letter for your reference throughout the school year. If you have questions about your
individual student attending homework club, please contact your child’s team leader, subject teacher, or the guidance department. Students are welcome to drop in for homework club as long as they are there to complete homework and follow the guidelines. If you absolutely expect your child to attend, please complete the form attached to this letter and return it to the office by Friday, September 29th.
Thank you,
Marcy Beinert
